I find this whole thing embarrassing for the US. Works councils are clearly a good idea. Our calcified labor law prevents them without full stop, NLRB unionization, which is unfortunate, but the politicians intimidating the workers is just plain ridiculous. Its very clear that VW wanted a works council (and thus the union) and that that was the purpose of the unionizaiton drive. The idea that this posed a threat to Tennessee that required trying to intimidate the workers is just plain silly (not like there should be subsidies in the first place, but that’s a different). It’s funny to see the ideological lines get twisted around here.
